A nanny is a professional childcare provider who offers personalised, one-to-one care in your home. Unlike nursery staff or babysitters, a nanny becomes a consistent part of your child’s daily routine, providing not just supervision but also educational activities, meal preparation, and help with school runs.
There are different types of nannies to suit your family’s needs:
-
Live-in Nanny – Lives with your family and provides full-time care, ideal for those needing flexible support.
-
Live-out Nanny – Commutes to your home and works set hours, perfect for structured childcare.
-
Part-time Nanny – Works fewer hours, great for families who need help around school times.
-
Temporary Nanny – Provides short-term care, such as holiday cover or support during parental leave.
-
Nanny-Share – One nanny cares for children from two families, making childcare more affordable.
When you hire a nanny, you become their employer, which means you're responsible for their salary, tax, and National Insurance. Many families use a payroll service to make this process hassle-free. Click on the link below to find out more about the responsibilities as an employer:

Nanny hourly rate and salary guide

Nanny rates in the UK can vary depending on experience, location, and the specific needs of your family. As a rough guide, hourly rates for nannies typically start around £9 to £12 per hour for less experienced carers, and can range upwards to £15 to £22 per hour for those with more experience or specialised skills.
For full-time nannies, annual salaries usually start at around £18,000 to £22,000 per year and can go up to £40,000 or more for highly experienced nannies. Live-in nannies tend to have slightly lower salaries due to the accommodation and meals provided.
Location also plays a role in determining rates, with nannies in areas like London or the South East generally commanding higher salaries due to the higher cost of living.
In addition to the salary, employers should also consider additional costs such as National Insurance contributions, holiday pay, and pension contributions for nannies earning over a certain threshold.
